When Technology Moved Forward, So Did We: A Phased Wi-Fi Upgrade
IDR had originally installed a cost-effective wireless solution for Central Queens Academy using Cisco Wireless N/AC access points, with WAPs installed every few classrooms. At the time, all school devices were Wireless N, which provided long range and stable performance — even across concrete and plaster walls.
However, after a PC refresh, the school's computers began using Wireless AC, which has faster speeds but reduced signal penetration. The result? Frequent disconnections in classrooms that didn't have a WAP installed.
IDR responded with a two-phase approach:
• Immediate fix – Our team remotely accessed every school computer and disabled the Wireless AC protocol, forcing devices to stay on the longer-range N band.
• Planned upgrade – We worked with school leadership to budget additional cabling and WAP installations to support full Wireless AC performance, with a rollout during summer break.
By fall, the school had a fully optimized, AC-compatible wireless network — with stable signal coverage in every classroom and no further connectivity complaints.
